0% VAT on residential PV
Since 1 April 2022, the UK government applies 0% VAT on energy-saving materials installed in residential dwellings, including solar photovoltaic systems. This includes the carport support structure when it directly carries the panels.
Eligibility conditions
- Installation on residential property (main residence or second home)
- Installed by a VAT-registered business
- Carport structure must be integral to the solar installation
- 0% rate runs through 31 March 2027 (subject to extension)
Smart Export Guarantee (SEG)
Replaces the old Feed-in Tariff for new installations. UK energy suppliers must offer an SEG tariff for surplus electricity exported to the grid. Typical rates range from 1p to 15p/kWh depending on supplier.
Home Energy Scotland — Renewable Heat Loan
Up to £15,000 interest-free loan for renewable systems including solar PV. Scotland residents only. Combined with grant of up to £6,000 for low-income households.
ECO4 (Energy Company Obligation)
Means-tested scheme providing fully-funded or grant-funded solar PV installations for low-income households. Application via local councils or partner installers.
